Next week, we will begin a unit on Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. As I mentioned last week, this novel has been banned frequently throughout our country in the past fifty years since it was published. Even today, it inspires strong feelings in all those who read it--some of whom love it and some of whom hate it. You will be able to decide for yourself in the coming weeks, but for now, tell me about a book that you already love. Is there any book that's had a significant impact on your life to date? What about a favorite novel that you could read again and again anytime you have the time and inclination? Is there a book you have any fond memories of reading in school? Something you had to read for class and found it wasn't as bad as you thought it might be? Come on, whether you love to read or not, tell me about a book you've read (not the one you described two weeks ago for your book review unless you are going to tell me something new about it and how it has changed your life!) and what it has meant to you.
A book I really lovved when I was younger was called "The Trail Of Tears". Which was about Cherokee Indians and them being taken away from their homes by army soldiers and the tragic events in it from the Cherokee Indians point of view. It didn't so much change my life but it did help me realize everyone has feeling and thyis would hurt anyone being taken away from their homes and families and friends.
ReplyDeleteI read a lot of books and they can change a persons view. I dont really think that I have had a book impact my life too awful much. The only thing books really do for me is open up new perspective. They show me other peoples views, other peoples stories. I mainly read fantasy and you probably think "Oh well that wouldnt do that" but it does. They are stories people have imagined, their own views intertwined with them. And every story has bits of truth in them, you just have to look, even if it is fiction it can teach you things. For example i read a book a couple of weeks ago called Crusade. It was about Vampires, and vampire hunters, but the people in the story were multilingual. I learned a couple of frases in a couple different languages.
ReplyDeleteI just love reading and i take little pieces of each book i read.
well i thought that i should comment on the Percy Jackson series. i think that it has changed my life by opening up my imagination a little wider and im able to turn things from a myth or a legend and can think of a bunch of ways to tie it in with reality. right now im writing a book that has to do with norse mythology and how all that could tie in with reality. its going to be awesome.
ReplyDeletewhen i play on the court and help someone that is not in a good mood and its hard to be nice to then but i do it any way and teach them about god. it good to take challages that you have not done before. we have courge avery day to do some thing right that will hint us to the future what you are going to be.
ReplyDeletemy favorite book as a child was holes. only because it had so many chapters in so little pages. however my favorite book these days that i could read over and over again would be ember. this book has so much adventure in it! i never got bored of this book. on another note i love doing blogs cause im intrested to see what your next blog will be!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Walmartbag! I'm so glad you are now blogging regularly and looking forward to it! The blogs are my favorite assignments to grade because I LOVE seeing what you all say when given the opportunity to think and write without the distractions of the classroom and without worrying over what someone else might think about what you say! Oh the freedom Anonymity brings! :) And as I have always loved to read, I love hearing about new books and what others enjoy about the experience as well!
ReplyDeleteRaven, don't sell yourself short! Fiction, even fantasy fiction, has so much to teach us about about the realities of life. Reading can open your eyes to so many new perspectives--you never know where it may take you!
And Mr. SuperAwesome--writing a book about Norse mythology! WOW! That sounds, well, SUPER AWESOME!!
And to every one of you, this is why I love the blogs, through your responses, you share yourselves--and you all are AMAZING!! :D
Im sorry to say there isnt a book that ill read more then once the reason being a cant stand to read.
ReplyDeletethe reason im reading the book i am now is because i enjoy the genre
One book I remember reading, that I didn't think I would like was 'Salem's Lot'. In seventh grade I had to choose a book quickly so I picked up the first book that looked interesting. I started reading the first chapter and I thought I was going to -really- hate this book. As Stephen King goes into deep detail in all of his work, it seems to move at a slower pace sometimes. I started to get really into the book, as it was haunting and the chilling atmosphere of the book kept on making me want to read. I really enjoy that book now and I could probably give it another read in the future.
ReplyDeleteA book i loved was Bo knows Bo, a biography on Bo Jackson! I love sports and this book was all about football. I really dont like to read so it was hard. This book had a lot of statistics and i liked reading those!
ReplyDeleteI remember reading the magic tree house novels when i was little. I use to read them all the time in elementry. I loved how the book always had an exciting adventures, and a good story theme. i use to love reading them but over the year i grew out of reading but i always remembered read the magic tree house serices, and i kinda miss it...
ReplyDeleteThe only book that i can think of that touches me, that I can read over and over again. Is one of the most simplest books. The Giveing Tree. My mom use to read that book to me all the time, and to this day, it still remains my favorite book. It inspires me to give people all I can. I love it.
ReplyDeleteThe book I would have to go with is The Lightning Thief. Being the only book I read in the series I feel that the book really opened my mind into the past religons of the people before us. Also I feel that hearing all the storys of the greek gods is quite interesting and I learned that I really like studying other religons.
ReplyDeleteWell i read this book called Augie. It was bout this boy who used to be a really good kid and then he met this girl and got into herion and a lot more. He thinks he could never fall in love with this girl but in the end he does and they both go and get help at boys and girls camps for drugies. They end up getting married, having kids, and getting to know Christ. Ever sence i had read that book it changed my life to know who to hang out with and who not to hang out with. I used to hang out with drugies and everything but now that i know what it makes people think of me I don't want people thinking that I'm doing that kind of thing cause im not like that at all. and now today I'm christian and know who to hang out with and who not to hang out with all because i sat down to read one little book. its funny how something so little can change your life forever!
ReplyDeletea book that i read that changed my life would be the book Fantastic Mr. Fox. i say this because i thought it wass going to be a terrible book. but it turns out that when we read this book it changed me from thinking there's no meaning to life to making me to go out and find out why the hell am i on this earth for. and i still haven't found out why. dang it this is going to be harder than i thought. sighning out sly cooper (my italian name)
ReplyDeleteSo far no book has made any impact in my life. Maybe for a week or two at the most but never one that will change my way of thinking in a major way. I always think of The Man Who Loved Clowns and The Series of Unfortunate Events when I think of books. They seem to have a place in my thoughts when i think about reading. The Man Who Loved Clowns was a book that we read in class and at first i though was just going to be another dumb book that we had to read in class but i evntually got into it and foun that i loved the book.
ReplyDeleteMy all time favorite book, and one that has had a massive impact on my life, is Looking for Alaska by none other than John Green. The story really impacted me and really got me thinking about life. After all, the book centers around Bolivar's question "How will I ever get out of this labyrinth?" As you read you fall in love with Pudge and his quirky habits, The Colonel and his insanity, and Alaska, reckless Alaska with her never ending adventures. They all come together to bring a sense of meaning to life, wether they knew it or not. The book itself was inspired by several true events and John Green put a bit of himself into each of the characters. The book is one to look into, and it will certainly bring tears to your eyes and leave you thinking.
ReplyDelete((Sorry, this is late...I don't really have a reason for that so yeah...I'm just lazy.))
It's not a book, but a series, specifically, The Series of Unfortunate Events, Most of my reading while growing up in Branson was The Series of Unfortunate Events (TSUF). I finished all thirteen, think there was thirteen anyway, books by the time I was in 6th grade.
ReplyDeleteAs great as it was, there is no book that I'd be willing to read multiple times, the story is just implanted in my brain. TSUF had a great storyline about a group of kids who's parents were killed from a fire and the sent from family member to family member as a syndicate is trying to hunt them down for their fortune (They were rich). I remember in 6th grade when I finally finished the series, which everyone finished it then, because that's when it came out. Although it's my favorite, I originally thought it would be bad, my mom made me read the first one, and I was hooked with this intriguing story.
I read the book The Road for a book report back in 7th grade. It's still one of my favorite books today. It's about a boy and his father surviving after a nuclear blast. Scrounging up materials and diverting cannibalistic marauders in nuclear winter wastelands. The book made me think on how, even if you don't get a long with someone, how strong your bond can be with them in a case of survival.
ReplyDeleteOne book that I have really liked was "Flowers for Algernon." It made me think about things like how you casn't take people for granted. Also, it made me think of how people are different from eachother, and it's very bad to be judgemental about someone even if you haven't gotten to know them first.
ReplyDeleteIshmael...enough said. There is no describing with words what one feels when reading this novel.
ReplyDeletewell my book would probly have to be where the red fern grows. this book has the biggest impact on me because my grandmother use to read it to me when i was little and i have good memories of it.
ReplyDeleteTheir has never been a book that i enjoyed enuf to read more than once .I have never really been into book are, reading at all .
ReplyDeleteto be honest there is not just one book that i love and could read over and over again its a series of books. these books are the Twilight Saga, all of them im not sure why but they are... a book that ive read in school that i wasnt really into and didnt think that i would like is To kill a Mocking Bird. i read this my freshman year and it just was a book that i really liked.
ReplyDeletei like the Pecy Jackson series. Ive read all of the book several times besides the last one. I have never read the last one because its always checked out.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book would probably have to be Brisingr of the Eragon series. It was one of those books that you couldn't wait to get home to so you could read it! I was able to relate also with the main character Eragon as he struggles with responsibility, struggle with commitment, and women. I can't say it changed my life but it most definately enhanced my reading experience.
ReplyDeleteLast year we read "Of Mice and Men". This was one of my favorite books that we read at school. The book taught people not to be mean to handicapped people.
ReplyDeleteim looking forward to reading the book
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book of all time is The Giver. I read it in my 7th grade class and although many kids in my class hated it I loved it.
ReplyDeleteI just love how different that book is compared to any other book that I have ever read.
I love the fact the book doesn't really tell you want happens at the end giving you the opportunity to imagine what ever you want.
I've read The Giver at least 5 times since 7th grade and each time I get exited when he is about to escape the village.
If you haven't read the book I would really recommend it. :)
I don't have a favorite book, i just love to read! Right now I'm reading about babysitting and nature. I want to learn more about how to take care of little kids. I love Kids!!!! But when i read about babysitting, it was a lot more complicated than i thought. But i know that i can do the job. the only problems that I'm facing is to know how to change a diaper! But if i practice, i can do it!
ReplyDeleteWell one of my favorite books is Where the Red Fern Grows. I've probably read it like 5 times. It's about this boy in the early 1900's who saves up money to buy 2 hunting dogs. and blah blah read it. Its really good. Another good book is Hatchet that book made me want to get stranded in some forest. It really opened up my mind on survival kinda like Man vs. Wild. Read those 2 books and watch Man vs. Wild
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why, but I actually enjoyed reading "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Moby Dick". I read them both in 7th grade. Even though "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" had pages and pages of that were pretty much 80% numbers, I somehow made it through it. (Most likely because I skipped the pages that were mostly numbers) They were both good books and I would like to read them again. But I seriously don't think I've ever read a book that had a serious outcome on me and changed my life forever. Mostly because I like fiction books and murder mysteries like James Patterson and John Grisham. But as I was typing that, I thought of a good series I read last year at Blue Eye. the Demonata series. Good books. Read them sometime. All like, 10 of them.
ReplyDeleteAt the particular moment, NO, there is no book than affects my life at all, because I don't read much, I see no point in reading a fake book, and the real ones are boring. -.- I am reading a excorcist book at the moment, which IS affecting me a little. But not overly a lot
ReplyDeleteI am not so much for reading a book I have already read again. I will if I need to for school, or because I want to but that would have to be one really good book because I don't see the point if you already read it once you already know what is going to happen.
ReplyDeleteIm not so much on reading the same books over and ofer again.
ReplyDeletecause it get really boaring but i will do it if i have to though
the only two books I could read over, and over are the Bible, and any Glenn Beck book.
ReplyDeleteWell I hate reading, it's so much of boringness, I remember reading the Aragon. It about a dragpon. Such a good book, but it never really impacted my life.
ReplyDeletei would have to say a book i could read over and over would have to be green eggs and ham because it was the first book i read all by myself
ReplyDeleteI read the book 1986. it has taught me that no one can control your life. lifes about the decisions you make not the decisions everybody else makes for you.
ReplyDeleteI read a book called the book without words and the thing was there was a magical book of speels and maps and potions but u had to hav green eyes to read it or it appered to be a book without words and i never completly finished it but my fav book of all time.
ReplyDeleteI try to think back at all the books ive read and there was one we read last year "of mice and men" and this book was in some ways insperational.
ReplyDeletelike in the end (without givving it away) of the two in the story one has to do the ultiment sacrifice for the other...but in a way i never saw comming. and it made me think...would i ever had to do something like that?...could i?
