Online Journal Entry #10

All the people like us are 'we,' and everyone else is 'They.' ~Rudyard Kipling
"Separate, but equal." It was a phrase derived from a Louisiana law from 1890, but the thoughts behind it--and the support of it--were predominant in this country for more than 60 years after the fact. What do you think? Where there is "separate," can there be "equal?" Could it be a different answer for differing situations? Why or why not?

  1. Well, in a way I'm against the idea, but if you look at society now, we still have a similar situation. We have separate sports teams, bathrooms, clothing sections, even magazines for men and women. That's not saying that a women couldn't wander over to the mens section and pick out a nice shirt for herself. Think about it though, if I were to come to school dressed in men's clothing, reading Sports Illustrated and talking about ESPN, would you be weirded out? Probably not as much as if a guy showed up dressed in women's clothes. All over the world, this whole separate but equal thing is going on. I really don't think you can agree or disagree with the statement, at least I can;t/

  2. I believe in equality for all. So when there is a separation sometime in history it should always eventually to equality. There should never really be a need for separation especially among races. Making one race more equal than another is inhuman because your taking one's human rights to equality away and that and I believe that is an act of inhumanity.

  3. No I dont think that there is a thing seperate but equal. Now days everything is either seporate or equal, not both. No matter what happens it would be either one.

  4. There is no such thing as sperate but equal if we are in different class of people and i have more money and fame were not equal and were sperate. But but therer cant be seperat but equal it just cant happen sorry.

  5. I think everyone should be treated equally its wrong for one race to have more rights than the other .We are all humans anyways why should someone have more rights than the somebody else .

  6. everyone should be treated equally no hate. But there is racism in 2010
    there shouldnt be any hate

  7. Seperate but equal cannot exist. Both sides could have differing lifestyles, different ways of doing things, and whatever group is larger is going to discriminate against the smaller group. If someone did something differnt it would make them weird and then they would be discriminated against. It's only together can there be equal, and even that doesnt really happen.

  8. Of course I believe in equality for everyone. I could never say anything different for different topics such as religion. People are people, why separate them if they're not 100% exactly like you?

  9. i beleive there can be seperate but equal. you do not have to be in a group to be equal you can be equal to other groups.

  10. I thinking that the word "separate" makes it not equal. I dnt think that there can be separation and equality at the same time. Equality is a good thing though.

  11. seperate is not equal, because one half is going to get the good stuff like better homes or schools while the other half get the crap seperate never has been and never will be equal

  12. i think equal is good for all people know matter how they act, color, type of gynguer and thier size and religion is also inportent. If we work togather evryone will be equal in a diifreat way.

  13. through out history we have seen the mistakes and the good choices our great nation has made. this choice of sperate but equal was the biggest mistake our country could make, thus i dont think sperate but i equal was a good idea. however it has chaanged over the years to what it should be everyone has equal rights. i agree with everyone having equal rights but not sperated.

  14. i agree with walmartbag. equal was a good idea. think of all the black actors or atheletes or authors or historians. why, if we didnt have equal rights, we wouldnt have Will Smith as one of the greatest actors ever. that'll give you something to think about. also i think that the whole idea of being separate is retarded. what kind of jerks would want to be separate. blacks are just the same as whites, i mean the only differance is the way they talk and the color of their skin.

  15. Separate but equal, it's a joke. There can never be separate AND equal things because one side will always be favored more, or better equipped, or just more advanced than the other. The only way for it to be equal is that it's united.

  16. Its ridiculous, thats what I think. There was no equal back than. Half of the people got goods, and half the people got everything horrible. It just wasnt fair. If it was really equal they all wouldve got the same, and also, have been treated the same.

  17. Seperate but equal is stupid. One side will be jealous of another side for dumb reasons. Everyone is equal. Everyone should be together in life, because life is a team game!

  18. I think that seperate and equal is good for gender, like guys and girls. I think that how the society was back then how there was two different socities back then like, "black and white" I think that was completely ridiculous because everyone is equal everyone is just different and unique in there own way.

  19. I think that everone should be treated the same no matter what color or anything. It's not right to treat someone with respect then treat the other really bad.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't believe in separate but equal.
If separate was equal than there would be no reason to ever be separated.
Everyone should be treated the same, after all we are all human.

  21. I believe that there really can not be seperate but equal because one side will always get something the other side has not gotten.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree with Sn!pe its kinda like when someone says something is free it's not really free because someone else has payed for it

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't think there is a way to bee separate but equal at the same time. But also kinda have that now, like guys wearing earrings is becoming more acceptable now but at work a lot of times it's not aloud but still a girl could wear a pair of earrings. And also in school it happens also, there's cliques like the jocks, the druggies, the popular girls and guys, and the girls and guys who are just in between and like having fun. A lot of things in life are separate in ways they can be equal and in others not so much.

  24. Separate but equal is a giant load of #$%&. How can you call two separate groups of people equal when calling them two separate groups of people? If everyone was equal, we wouldn't have too divide them into groups. You can't say people are equal or have equal rights when, you separate them. If you don't allow one group of people to use the same facilities or, sit in the same seats on the bus or, use the same drinking fountain, as a different group of people, then you obviously don't consider them to be equal to each other. And that is why, it should be called "Separate, NOT Equal."

  25. Great thoughts, everyone! And I do agree with most of you here--there can be no equality when these separations exist. And while our country has made great strides in promoting racial equality in the past 50 years, a plethora of other separations exist. For as long as there are distinctions made between colors, races, genders, religious beliefs, lifestyles, etc., there can be no real equality. Consider yourself and then the others around you. Do you focus on the ways you are different? Or the ways you are the same? It's something to think about.

  26. It's all awful. You can't be seperate and still equal. You have to be together and equal. It would only make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think everyone should be equal back then it was pretty messed up and we shouldn't want that it has changed a lot since then, so we need to keep in how it is. Or maybe even get better with the rasism.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think every one should be equal
cause honstly there are no diffent. and people who think there is a diffrence is stupid : )

    ReplyDelete
  29. yes i think that there could be equal. because it would be really different without it being equal. also i think it was honest abe that helped end slavery so we owe it to him that it isnt like it was in the 1900's.

    ReplyDelete
  30. no i dont think there can be seperate but still be equal becuase your basicly not doing the same thing and not being treated the same also... you'll always have to do the same thing at diffrent time or diffrent day bec of your race and i dont beleive that is right...

    ReplyDelete
  31. there will never be equality, seperation or no. there will always be peolpe that think they are better than others. its our nature

    ReplyDelete
  32. Its impossible to have both simply by there meanings. separate, "to keep apart or divide, as by an intervening barrier or space." Equal, "like or alike in quantity, degree, value, etc." Now tell me how something can be different, and the same at the same time, the answer is you can't. Case closed, I win. =P

  33. Welcome back ???? ! I've missed the inherent logic of your posts! Yours too, Hellfire. You both ought to try sharing your insight a little more in class and letting everyone benefit from your unique perspectives! :D

  34. there is no such thing as seperate but equal, except boys & girls bathrooms but thats another topic. I think every one thats not a criminal should have equal rights.

    ReplyDelete
  35. nothing can be seperate but equal. it doesnt exist. its one or the other

    ReplyDelete
  36. i think that if we are seperate than we are not equal i think that everyone should have the same right as everyone else and no one should get more of something just cuz of there skin, race, religion, and just you do things different than someone

    ReplyDelete
  37. For one, there is no " Seperate but equal" and there never will be, because there will be those people that discriminate against others and those that try to accept everyone, and they themselves get discriminated apon for such "crimes". In this world, there are different colors, religions, and person opinions, thus there will never be "seperate but equal".

    ReplyDelete
  38. If you are seperate you are not equal in the terms us americans had that no blacks could eat where we eat or drink where we drink is just stupid and ignorant.

    ReplyDelete
  39. During thre time that the phrase "Separate, but equal." derived it was never equal. Colored people still had seperate everythig but not equal. The bathrooms, seats, jobs, etc.. were of lower quality. There can be seperate and equal but to me it makes no sence that anyone would care. Everyone was created equal and no one is alike. Skin color is just another characteristic that can be used to differentiate people such as tall or short.

  40. I feel that no, the conditions were not equal. there were so many wrongs that people expeirienced in that time that there is really only so much we can do to make up for the things we did.
