As we read this week, Oedipus has just discovered the shocking truth about his life. On a very different scale, have you ever discovered something surprising about yourself? Maybe a talent or a skill you didn't know you had until you tried something new? Maybe a place you didn't want to go, until you went and found--to your surprise--you liked it?! Or even something that you were anxious to try, only to discover it was not for you!! What about something as simple as getting to know someone you thought you already knew and found they weren't the way they seemed at all? Sometimes you find out whom you ARE by finding out whom you are NOT--like trying on new experiences to see if they will be a good fit for you? Trying something new can be illuminating, so tell me the story of a time you discovered something surprising about yourself (one sentence is not going be enough); and remember what you've learned when the next new opportunity presents itself! :)
Hey--no double dipping!! If you wrote your personal narrative about a situation like this, tell us something new!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI discovered I can't really play instruments (or maybe just don't have the effort too) but I really like listening to it. Tried the piano, saxophone, and guitar and never really got into any of them. I do like mixing electronically which I found out one night playing on my brothers mixing board. I don't really think that's considered an instrument?
ReplyDeleteGrowing up I was forced to move every my dad did and once you live some where long enough you tnd to enjoy it well moving to branson wasn't like that i was forced down here cuz of devorce and really didnt want to but iv been here almost a uear and like it here then i did in maine
ReplyDeletei didnt know i was good at writing fiction stories until about 5th grade. At my old school they made us all write stories for young authors competitions and i really didnt want to do it. I thought it would be boring and didnt really think about it. But then my imagination ran wild with me and i mixed fiction and real life to make a story that ended up winning the young authors competition. It was super fun.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm. I thought that i couldn't ever do tumbling but i went to this place called monarch, and i met my trainer, carl, he taught me how to do back hand springs and showed me that i was more flexibile than i ever thought i would be. It was awesome!
ReplyDeletei discover something about my self that i should not be codepandent i should let them do stuff and they will learn thier lesson.I try to fix people because i dont want them to be a bad at anything i want them to be susasful.Im doing my bast not to be codepandent and its hard but im trying.
ReplyDeletei didnt know i was a reaally good athlete until i was in eigth grade.
ReplyDeletecoach asked me if i ever played organized athletics i said no.
so i played pretty good first team all conference
I didnt think i could get something we were learning in Geometry. So i was afraid to do my homework. But once i started doing my homework, I found out it was easier than i thought. I just had to try.
ReplyDeletei think the quotation "we know what we are, but know now what we may be" means that there are times in our life that we think we are going down the right path but later on in life we realize what the heck happened or wonder the the heck went wrong. for instance a person that messes around at school will get the teracher to think that they are a bad person. another example is that a person that does their hoomework and does what their told will most likely get the teacher to thinkj that they are a good person.
ReplyDeleteok sorry accidentally sent it after that i realized that i wanted to put more. any way if you show up to a job interview cleanly shaven in a suit and a tie their likely to hire you. on the other hand if you show up to a job with a beard, havent had a shower, you look like you live on the streets, and you look like bigfoot they will definitely will not hire you!!!!!!!! this is axelblast sighing out peace.
ReplyDeleteI've found I'm pretty good at sitting! I mean, at first, I was appalled by the idea of not using my legs often, but then I did it one day and I was elated! It's been great ever since. I do often use my legs for the health benefits and because I have to, but besides that, you never see me just standing.
ReplyDeleteTrack. It's one word that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. But in 8th grade I had no idea how much I hated it because well...I'd never tried it! Though I was a pretty good runner I seemed to dread everytime the annoucer would call my event. It was then I realized that even though I was alright at it, I didn't have a passion or love for the sport like some of my other friends did. And so I learned that track, ain't my thang haha :)
ReplyDeleteThe story of Oedipus made me sad that Oedipus was just realizing what was going on in his life. You have to read to know what i'm talking about. (I love William Shakespeare's work! He is so Wise! )
ReplyDeleteI learned that I am a good person when my grandpa was sick. I had to do things that sucked to keep him healthy. It was totally worth it though because now he is gone and i cant take care of him.
ReplyDeleteI found out that i really like tennis. at first i thought it was just a joke but now i really do like it and want to continue to do it and get better. its wierd that when you actually try something you find out that you love it!
ReplyDeleteAfter nearly 4 years of Summerstage (this is not a rewrite of my personal narrative), I seemed to connect with my friend Sam. The first few years we really hated each other and would constantly pick on one another. Then, a few years ago, I got his number from a friend we had in common. I started talking to him all the time and came to find out that he was extremely smart and intellegent. He and I became really close, but now our friendship is starting to fade. I really owe a lot of who I am to him. He gave me my musical taste and abilities, a shoulder to cry on, and a honest friend who was never cruel. I thank him for that, and I'll never forget our friendship, even if it seems to be slipping from our grasp.
ReplyDeleteSo this has nothing to do with the blog, but I just realized that I wrote a really sappy friendship story. That's rare for me, I don't do that kind of emotion.
No, it was all exactly about the blog, AstroKitty! A friend whom you got to know differently after a few years ... I made the jump with you as you went along! That's the great thing about writing: Once you start down a path, you never can tell where it will lead. What a great way to discover something surprising about yourself!! ;)
ReplyDeleteWell my brothers decided to play tennis this summer, so I thought maybe I could like it to. So I got one of my friends to try it with me even though I could tell she really didn't want to do it at all. But as the year went on the better it all became and the better I got. I still remember the first time I actually won a match... it felt awesome! Now I plan on doing it again every year and to continue playing with my family outside of school.
ReplyDeleteSo one day I was with some friends and they decided they wanted to go paintballing. I didn't really wanna do it cause of the pain I would have to take. We went and I found out that I really like it. It's fun and I'm good at it. Never had more fun in my life.
ReplyDeleteI have learned that I have a good style. most people dont care what they put on it the morning but for me I have to plan for tomorrow. Its pritty crazy. But for the most part I look better than every one else.
ReplyDeleteOne time my youth group and I were going to Forsyth for a retreat. I didn´t want to go because it was going to be for six hours. I also dind´t want to go because I thought it was going to be boring. When we got there it turned out to be fun. We played games and did some fun activities. Next time I don´t want to do something I will probably end up doing it.
ReplyDeleteI dicovered that i'm a good dramatic actor. I don't act any more but if I did I would be on my way to holly wood! But its in the past where it will stay for good.
ReplyDeleteDramatic actor, huh? I CAN'T WAIT for the Antigone performances!! :)
ReplyDeleteWell, When i was about 4 i was "chillin" with a frined of mine in headstart and i remember when we were suposed to be taking a nap and well....we werent naping. she kept poking me and well i poked her blah blah boring little kid play loll and then she stuck her tongue out at me and that just cascaded into all diffirent things we discovered we could do. I found out i could shake my eyes, like vibrate them...it's really weird lol and i find it fun!! :D
ReplyDeleteSomething I had realized bout myself that I didn't know is that I really love to sing I didn't realize till 8th grade when I took Chorus I was a pretty good singer that next year I tried out for an all girl auditioned chorus group and I made it. I have loved music since and I have been in Ladies Select Ensemble for 2 years and I plan on doing it till I graduate. !
ReplyDeleteI learned that my mom is a freak, yea, I know; It's great when she makes my lunch and all, but when you make her mad, your life is as good as gone. My mom took my video games away from me for a worksheet in Mr. Neals that it is impossible for me to turn in. Yes impossible, because this is Mr. Neals rules, turn your work in on time, 1 days late equals half off, any more, he won't accept it. So there was a substitute in Mr. Neals (he's cross-country coach) and spaced out about a worksheet, couple days later I asked him "I spaced out about this worksheet" obviously he didn't accept it. So now my mom is freaking out because I'm getting a 96% in his class, and that's not up to my mom's standards, and I can't even turn in the paper. So I'm stuck without video games, because my mom won't let until I turn in the assignment, and Mr. Neal won't even accept it.
ReplyDeleteI found out that I really like track. I liked to run in the first place but running against others that are older lets me test my abilitys and helps me push my self.
ReplyDeleteI used to play basketball for my old school. I don't remember what year I started playing, but I do know that I quit after 5th grade. I wasn't bad, and it wasn't that I didn't enjoy it, it was the coaches. They would always yell and scream all the time and, since I wasn't the best player, I didn't get played very much. So I quit. And now I wish I hadn't. As the years went by I got better and everyone said I should play but, I had gone too long without playing a serious game off basketball so, it would be like starting all over again. I would like to play again but, I can't go from not playing seriously for 5 years, straight to sophomore basketball. No friggin' way.
ReplyDeleteHey ArtisicallyInclined, where there's a will, there's a way! You should go for it! What's the worst that could happen?! :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was young, I was afraid of horses, but loved them, still do. Their massive size scared me to death, but then, I met a girl at this church, she was about 3 or more years younger than me, she talked that her mom had horses and asked if I wanted to see them, my mom said it would be a good opportunity, and they let me stay the night with her and her mother. The next morning, we set out to the pasture, I myself didn't want to ride, but my newly found friends mom threw me up into the saddle and once I got over the height of the horse, I really liked it, being in control of a gentle giant. We started out to the arena, and he bolted, scared by a flock of birds fling in front of us. He was running so fast, that I couldn't hold onto the reins, but he came up to a fence, and I knew he wouldn't make the great height, so I pulled on the rein harshly, bringing his head along to my side. After a few seconds, he slowed to a stop and I walked him back to the arena where my friend and her scared mom were waiting for me. That day, I fell in love with riding horses, and loving the speed that they can run, me and my friends mom raced a lot after that, until she kicked me out of her house. LOL
ReplyDeletei discovered that i have an unbelievable appetite for any random foods. i discovered this when i was about ten years old.

ReplyDeletei discovered that i love working on vehicels and that i want to go to an automotive school when i leave highschool. i found this out while working on my truck with my dad. when i was younger it didnt really have any interest to me. when i actualy put in the effort to do it i discovered i really like it.
ReplyDeletei like to make people smile! i dont do it in some usual way by telling a joke. i confuse the person in a way that all they can do is laugh. i also am a good listener. it could be a complete stranger and i would help this person in whatever power i have. i wouldnt say that i am good at this but more along the lines of enjoying it. i actually discoverd this as i was thinking about what to put. this blog actually reminded me how much i hate it when people are sad!
ReplyDeleteI learned how to snap my fingers in a much more different way then others did. When i was about 6 i still could not snap and this angered me for most others could. The problem was that i could not snap with my thumb and "bird" finger. I was trying really hard one day to snap and as always i was failing epically so something in me made me use my thumb and index instead and i finally snapped so know i only snap using my index and thumb, crazy right.
ReplyDeleteWell over the summer when i was visiting with my dad he took me golfing a few times. When he first told me we were going i was excited because i thought i would do good. But when we got there and started playing i reallly sucked at it. Then he was trying to give me advice which just made it worse. Then i'd do what he was telling me and hit the ball straight then get mad because what he was telling me helped. But each time we went i did better but i still sucked. So i thought i was going to be good at gold because im good at most sports but i turned out to be a failure at gold i guess.
ReplyDeleteIve learned that if i put my mind to something i would acheive it. Then i have a really bad habit of cleaning up messes and keeping everything nice and neat. so my room is always spotless and very clean.
ReplyDeleteMeeting new people is one of the things that i never liked to do. I was shy and didnt talk much but as i began to become more social it became easy to meet new people. I learned that as you grow up you will be faced with new people all the time and you have the choice of making them a friend, enemy, or a stranger. Working was how i learned that it was necessary to pick up the skill and fast! Working with people every day and seeing them as strangers can make the job harder and uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteI jus skimmed through the passage so i dont have a clear idea what im blogging for
ReplyDeleteHmmm, saintsfan1, I'm skimming through your entry but can find no clear evidence of a thought to give a grade for ...
ReplyDeletewell iverecently realized that not everything in my life is not what it appears. this sort of makes me uncomfortable because it is out of the ordinary and it is not what im used to... so im sure that you understand why that makes me uncomfortable
